Candidacy in the 4th Olympiad in Medical English 2022We are proud to announce that our Medical Faculty is participating in the 4th Olympiad in Medical English 2022, organized by the following universities in Russia: I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University (Sechenov University), Ural State Medical University (USMU) and Prof. V.F. Voino-Yasenetsky Krasnoyarsk State Medical University (KrasSMU). Our Faculty participates in the team contest with a group 3 medical students, namely Panagiotis Gkesoulis (team leader), Athanasios Mparmperis and Erotokritos Rompotis, who produced a 5min video, promoting our city of Ioannina, the University of Ioannina and the Faculty of Medicine to international students. Theodora Tseligka, a Senior Teaching Fellow in Medical English, is coaching this team as this is the first time a Greek Medical School has a team candidate in this competition. Registration in Foreign Language Centre's courses / spring semester / 2019The registration for the new courses of the Foreign Languages Centre of the University of Ioannina has just opened!! These courses are outside the degree curriculum of the University's Departments, they are optional and are offered for free at the Foreign Languages Centre.
Anyone interested please fill in their date in the link below, where you can find days and times of all courses. They are open to students, administrative and teaching staff.
Each class will accept 30 participants. If there are more people interested, there will be a draw, on Friday, 22nd February, at 13.00 (at the Language Lab, room 213/214, Central Library ground floor).
At this first stage, you will be able to select only one language.
Then, if there are empty seats in the courses, we will make a second call, so that you can register for more than one languages.

Open Day - Foreign Languages Centre and Centre for the Study of the Hellenic Language and CultureFollowing the previous jointly organised activities, the Foreign Languages Centre and the Centre for the Study of the Hellenic Language and Culture are now organising together an Open Day for Greek and foreign students as well as for the whole academic community in an effort to promote language learning and multilingualism. The Open Day will take place on Thursday, 14/02/2019, between 9.30a.m. and 12.30pm at the main Auditorium of the Central Library. Senior teaching fellows and instructors with a specialisation in Foreign Language Teaching for Academic and Specific Purposes will inform the academic community about the common projects and activities of the two Centres (e.g. educational programmes, internship opportunities, research projects, innovative teaching practices). Alongside the event, two (2) very interesting Workshops will take place (with English as a working language). Participation will operate on a first-come, first-served basis, so anyone interested should register in the relevant link. For more information, please see the attached Programme.

Funding for the support of Italian Language Teaching at the Foreign Languages Centre of the University of IoanninaOne more success for the Foreign Languages Centre of our University! We are happy to announce that for a second year we have managed to secure funding by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in order to support Italian language teaching at our University. The funding finances research and Italian language teaching for free for the students of the University of Ioannina for one academic year. So far, three (3) courses of Italian language (two Beginner courses and one Intermediate) have been organised, while applied language research is carried out with regards to optimum teaching practices in foreign languages. The project leader of this programme is the former Vice-Rector, Prof. A. Fotopoulos, whose support has been invaluable both at the project proposal stage as well as in promoting and effectively implementing the programme. We will soon inform you about future developments. Visit of the Consul General and the Vice-Consul of Turkey at the University of IoanninaThe Consul General of Turkey in Athens, Ms Oya Yazar and the Vice-Consul Mr. Oğuz Köşker visited the University of Ioannina on Tuesday, December 11, 2018. The main reason of the visit was the pilot teaching of Turkish language to the University students, which is held this year for the first time at the Foreign Languages Centre of the University of Ioannina.
During the visit, the Consul General and the Vice-Consul met with Rector Prof. Triantaphyllos Albanis, the Vice-Rector of Administrative and Academic Affairs and Student Welfare Prof. Minas Paschopoulos, as well as with Ms Th.Tseligka, Senior Teaching Fellow in English, who is heading the specific language project.
The Rector gave a detailed presentation of the University of Ioannina, emphasizing the academic and research activities of the Institution. The Consul General expressed particular interest in the possibilities of collaboration between the departments of the University of Ioannina and corresponding university departments in Turkey. As far as Turkish language teaching is concerned, the prospects of cooperation between the University of Ioannina and the Consulate General of Turkey were discussed so that the language could continue to be offered on an annual basis to the students and staff of the Insitution, aiming also at the acquisition of a certification on behalf of the students.

Erasmus+ Staff Training Week 2018Erasmus+ Staff Training Week 2018 - "New pathways in foreign language teaching and learning" The Foreign Languages Centre and the Center for the Study of the Hellenic Language and Culture at the University of Ioannina organise a staff training week in the framework of the Erasmus+ programme entitled “New pathways in foreign language teaching and learning”. A new course: Spanish for Academic Purposes The Foreign Languages Centre of the University of Ioannina is organizing a short intensive course in Spanish for Academic Purposes. Lessons will take place from 9th October till 15th December 2017 by Jaime Sanz Burdiel (BA in Spanish Philology at Universidad Complutense de Madrid, MA in Teaching Spanish as a Second Language)

Celebration of European Day of Languages 2017Celebration of European Day of Languages 2017 The Foreign Languages Centre and the Centre for the Study of the Hellenic Language and Culture are organising a Celebration of the European Day of Languages on 26th September 2017, at 6.00pm at the Cultural Centre “Dimitrios Hatzis” (Ioannina, Greece). The aim of this event is to inform the wider public on language learning issues and to promote linguistic diversity and intercultural understanding. Invited teachers will present talks on relevant issues, while many interactive language activities will take place on the day, in parallel to similar events all around Europe. The celebration of this day is supported by the Council of Europe. The event is addressed to language teachers, students, parents and children. Successful completion of the Erasmus+ Staff Week Training 2017The University Foreign Languages Centre and the Center for the Study of the Hellenic Language and Culture at the University of Ioannina successfully organised a staff training week in the framework of the Erasmus+ programme, entitled “New opportunities and challenges in foreign language teaching”. The training took place on Lefkas Island from 26 to 30 June 2017. Seventeen (17) academics and university language teachers, from the following European Tertiary Academic Institutions, participated in the training week: Aalto University (Finland), Brunel University London (United Kingdom), COMUE Lille Nord de France (France), National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (Greece), University of Akureyri (Iceland), Università di Firenze (Italy), Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (Spain), University of Pécs (Hungary), University of Siena (Italy), University of Urbino Carlo Bo (Italy), Wrocław University of Technology and Science (Poland). The training week included lectures on teaching Greek and English as foreign languages, teaching languages for specific academic and professional purposes, intercultural education, web tools for foreign language teaching and learning, distance learning and challenges in running and managing Foreign Language Centers. The participants had the opportunity to work in groups, exchange ideas, and experiences and discuss issues of common concern. Moreover, the participants had the opportunity to present their Institutions and develop inter-institutional co-operations. The participants were warmly welcomed by the Rector of the University of Ioannina, Prof. Georgios Kapsalis, the Vice-Rector, Prof. Andreas Fotopoulos, and the Vice-Mayor of Lefkas on Education matters, Mr Filippos Kourtis. The training week was an opportunity to promote the University Foreign Languages Centre and the Center for the Study of the Hellenic Language and Culture abroad. We are already in the process of establishing co-operations with the participants’ Institutions for future collaborations. During the week, educational fieldtrips to museums and archaeological sites in Preveza and Lefkas were organised. The participants were also offered a guided tour in the city of Lefkas.
