English for Academic and Scientific Purposes BEE507 Development of the appropriate language skills (vocabulary & grammatical-syntactic features) for the comprehension of the basic English Terminology in the science o Biology as well as for the comprhension and written production of medical scientific papers The main topics is: The academic organisation of the university environment – Biochemistry – Molecular Biology – Genetics – Cell Biology – Physiology – Zoology - Botanics Language features: Tenses (Active & Passive Voice) – Derivatives & Nominalisation – Prepositions – Participles & Gerunds – Relative clauses – Reporting verbs – Modal verbs & Hedges. The structure of the biomedical research paper (Title, Abstract, Methodology, Graph Description, Results, Discussion, References).
Course methodology and outcomes: The material used for teaching include: a book (distributed via Eudoxus) and digital, multimedia material, uploaded in the online platform E-course of the Univ. of Ioannina. Group projects are assigned and particular emphasis is placed upon use of New Technologies (power-point presentations, creation of infographics, use of corpora, etc.) for the practice of language skills. By the end of this course, students are expected to have acquainted with the basic English Terminology of Biology and the language requirements of a medical scientific paper.

The goals of the course are the following: Acquisition of a Level B2 vocabulary, A short revision of Grammar, Acquisition of basic writing skills [Sentence/clause distinction, Types of clauses, Paragraph Writing (Topic Sentence, Unity, Coherence-Cohesion, Linking Devices),Argumentative Essays]
At the beginning of the semester, all students take a placement test. Students attaining a score corresponding to Level B2 and beyond are exempted from the course. Students can sit for the placement test only once.
Students who qualify for the course successfully complete it, if their exam mark is at least 5.
B2 3 4 h/week
English ΙΙ XHΥ068 The course English Language II runs for a single semester and its main objective is to familiarize students with some introductory terminology encountered in Chemistry, namely: Classification of Matter (Elements, Compounds and Mixtures), States of Matter (Solids, Liquids and Gases), Physical Changes, Chemical Changes and Properties of Matter, Dalton’s Atomic Theory, Ions, Chemical Reactions and Equations, Chemical Bonds, Acids and Bases, Solutions
In addition, students are instructed: In the principles of naming ionic and molecular compounds, In the principles of naming monoatomic and polyatomic Ions, How the various lab instruments are called, How to describe the colours and different kinds of texture of materials and substances
Finally, students are offered some preliminary knowledge on how to write academic/technical text, e.g. how to write definition, classification, process, cause and effect paragraphs, how to describe an experiment etc.

English for Microeconomics and Macroeconomics Description The course provides an introduction to the English basic terminology, language structures and concepts in Microeconomics and Macroeconomics using authentic texts and relevant audiovisual material. Some of the main thematic units covered include: factors of production, demand and supply, consumer’s behavior, production, unemployment, inflation, GDP, trade, quantitative methods, business cycles, taxation, etc.
Furthermore, students develop and practice skills related to academic speaking and writing, i.e. paragraph writing, nominalization, formal electronic correspondence, emphasis, passive voice, graph description, etc.

English Technical Terminology  ΕΤΥ407 The course “English Technical Terminology” is a compulsory course. The course runs for a single semester and its main objective is to familiarize students with the basic terminology encountered in texts related to the Materials Science. More specifically, the terminology in the following thematic areas is examined: Metals and Ceramics, Glasses and Polymers, Composite Materials and Semi-conductors, The structure of Atom, Chemical Bonds (Ionic, Covalent and Metallic), Crystalline Structure (Seven Systems and Fourteen Lattices), Metal Ceramic and Polymer Structures, Tensile Test, Compression Test, Elastic and Plastic Deformation
Additionally students are taught how tense use, noun phrases and passive voice are customized in Academic English. Finally, they are offered some ground knowledge of Technical and Academic Writing, namely the writing of: Definition paragraphs, Classification paragraphs, Cause-effect paragraphs, Process-description paragraphs, Paraphrases, Paragraphs describing graphs and statistical data

English Ι (Terminology) 45 The course “Foreign Language” is a compulsory course. The course runs for one semester and its main objective is to familiarize students with the basic terminology encountered in the most important fields in Physics, namely: Mechanics-Kinematics, Forms of Energy, Thermodynamics, Electric Current – Circuits – Electromagnetism-Batteries,  Electronics – Transistors,  Wave-Particle Duality Phenomena – Light,  Sound Waves,  Nuclear Physics, Quantum Physics.
Additionally students are taught how tense use, noun phrases and passive voice are customized in Academic English. Finally, they are offered some ground knowledge of Technical and Academic Writing, namely the writing of: Definition paragraphs, Classification paragraphs, Cause-effect paragraphs, Process-description paragraphs, Paraphrases, Paragraphs describing graphs and statistical data.
Students having a C2 level of knowledge of ASEP (e.g. Proficiency certificate in English) may be exempted, if they wish, from the examination of the course receiving a grade of seven (7). These students should register for the course and then submit an application to the Secretariat attaching a certified copy of the corresponding certificate. Students who wish to improve the aforementioned grade may participate in the examination of the course during the exam periods of the academic year for which the course has been included in the registration form.
